Bernal, 5 things to try while you’re here!

Having lived in Queretaro for more than 15 years I am a little embarrassed that I hadn’t been to Bernal, ever! Bernal is a Magic Town (This is what we call small, colorful towns in Mexico that are listed as worth a visit) that is 45 minutes away from Queretaro city, and even though I’d seen pictures before, I never thought I’d like it this much! So here’s 5 things you can’t miss while visiting this colorful paradise!

1. Appreciate the view of the famous Monolith: Since you arrive at the town you are greeted with the most beautiful view of the Peña (the monolith) and it’s without a doubt stunning! So weather it’s from a terrace (I recommend Datso, it has great food and an incredible view), or from the city center, admiring the Peña for a while is a must!
2. Try the traditional gorditas of Bernal: In the main road leading to the central courtyard there’s a restaurant of “gorditas” (round salty dough filled with beans, and other delicious fillings) called “El Negrito” and they are definitely worth a try, I promise you’ll be very pleasantly surprised!
3. Climb the Peña monolith during sunrise! Weather it’s by walking or climbing, this is without a doubt one of the top attractions of the town! But what I recommend is that you get up a little too early and walk to the top during sunrise! This is an excellent way to start your day and to live this experience with another point of view; besides, it’s less crowded and the view is stunning!
4. Walk between the streets and buy local goods! Weather it’s fresh made cheese bread (we bought it and it’s delicious), typical mexican candy or handmade crafts, this is a great way to explore the town!
5. Finally you can top your experience by staying at a hotel here in Bernal. There’s a new hotel called “Hotel de Piedra” which is completely new in town; its architecture is all made of stone and blends in just with the monolith! Its view is worth the visit!

This magic town is a full experience that I fully recommend you to try out! It has a little bit of everything; food, culture, and activities to keep you on the go! If you have a spare day in Queretaro this is a great place you can visit; and it only proves once again that you don’t need to go far to find amazing places!

Al haber vivido en Querétaro por más de 15 años me apena un poco el hecho de que hasta este año no había tenido la oportunidad de visitar el Pueblo Mágico de Bernal; pero debo decir que nunca pensé que iba a ser un lugar que me gustara tanto! Así que aquí les comparto 5 cosas que no se pueden perder al visitar este colorido y tradicional pueblo mágico.

1. Apreciar la vista de la Peña: Desde que llegas el pueblo te recibe con la vista más impresionante de este monolito; así que ya sea desde la plaza central, alguna terraza (les recomiendo mucho Datso por su buena comida y increíble vista) o simplemente desde tu hotel, vale la pena admirar esta maravilla natural y tomar algunas fotos.
2. Probar las típicas gorditas de Bernal: En la calle principal frente a la plaza central, hay un restaurante de gorditas llamado “El Negrito”, este es sin duda uno de los restaurantes más típicos del pueblo y vale la pena visitarlo para probar algunos de los sabores de gorditas que ofrecen, son deliciosas y te quedarás con el corazón contento!
3. Subir la Peña en el amanecer! La peña se puede subir de 2 formas, caminando (que es la forma más común) o escalando (para esto se necesita experiencia previa y un guía calificado). Pero una de las mejores formas de apreciar la Peña y la vista que ofrece es subirla caminando en el amanecer; sin duda así podrás tener una experiencia mucho más única y las fotos que saques quedarán increíbles.
4. Caminar entre las calles y comprar artesanías locales. Bernal a pesar de ser chiquito tiene mucho que ofrecer al público, está lleno de tiendas de dulces, comida y artesanías locales y puedes pasar mucho tiempo explorando todas ellas! Estoy segura que encontrarás ahí algo que te llame mucho la atención; nosotros compramos pan de queso y estaba delicioso!
5. Finalmente puedes tener la experiencia de quedarte a dormir en alguno de los hoteles del pueblo. El “Hotel de Piedra” es nuevo y ha dejado a muchos viajeros completamente sorprendidos! Está hecho con un estilo de arquitectura de piedra, lo cual hará tu estancia completamente única!

Este Pueblo Mágico sin duda es una experiencia colorida que vale la pena vivir. Tiene un poco de todo; comida, cultura y actividades que harán de tu visita una increíble! Si tienen la oportunidad vayan a visitar Bernal, ya que a nosotros nos demostró que no necesitas viajar lejos para conocer lugares increíbles.
